How do we get comfortable with our hands and head down, our center shifted, and the space around us seemingly rearranged?

Todayโ€™s journey will be about discovering how to cultivate safety and trust, within ourselves allowing us to navigate upside-down movement more easily. This day will give us a taste of exiting and entering meetings in CI also with our hands grounded down rather than just our feet.

We will explore various ways to tap in to, nourish, and harvest these qualities so that over time, moving with our hands and head down can become another safe and familiar space to enter.

Through somatic exercises, imagination, and other practices, weโ€™ll deepen our trust in our ability to care for ourselves during these upside-down movements.

I will share my years of experience integrating inner and outer body awareness, and the flow of movement. Together, weโ€™ll work on strengthening both the body and mind to support confidence in inversions.

Through mindful practice, weโ€™ll explore how to connect with our bodies when upside down, develop strength, and build the awareness necessary to move comfortably on our hands in dance. The goal is to expand your accessible, safe space in both solo movement and in Contact Improvisation with a partner.

This is just the beginning of a never-ending exploration.

Iโ€™m Julia Schmidt, a former circus artist and handbalancer with more than 14 years of experience teaching handstands, free movement, and stretching. More recently, Iโ€™ve added Contact Improvisation (CI) to my repertoire.

As a passionate dancer, improviser, and bodyworker, Iโ€™m deeply curious about the subtleties of movement – the unseen forces that support our muscles and bones long before structure takes shape.

I like to call them ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐œ๐ž๐ฌ: .

What started as a purely structural and muscular practice of handstand-technique years ago evolved into something deeper:
a practice of connection, space, and utilizing the support that space – alongside the support of our own extended space – offers.

Over the years, Iโ€™ve integrated my understanding of my sensed anatomy, movement, and energy into my dance, enriching my sense of presence in my body and expanding my approach to movement. This has opened up new possibilities for moving ever more freely, comfortably, and with great joy.

To me, dancing is not about performance or achievement. Itโ€™s about playing, loving, enjoying, and expressing.

It is settling presence firmly in the body… and creating a safe heaven for us to move in and from.

This workshop / laboratory is for dancers and movers that are interested in Handstand/ Inversions and in finding more accessible safe space in their dance – including being upside down.
Especially designed for Contact Improv dancers but also suitable for movers and dancers of other fields, that are curious about merging in to Contact Improvisation.

Some movement practice is required.
