Who is Charlie?

Charlie Morrissey is a director/choreographer, performer, teacher, and researcher, working in the field of performance for 30 years. He is influenced by substantial ongoing working relationships with Steve Paxton, Siobhan Davies, Lisa Nelson, Kirstie Simson, Scott Smith, Katye Coe, K.J.Holmes, Katie Duck and others.
Teaching is central to his practice and his classes are laboratories for exploration and discovery. He teaches for dance and theatre companies, institutions, festivals and independent organisations internationally.

Recent and upcoming projects include several collaborations with Siobhan Davies; a new performance for five dancers – If this is it, then what are we going to do with it? –; a solo choreographed by Colin Poole- White Charlie; and he is currently performing in Quarantine’s Wallflower; + creating What’s not there – a new solo for Tanzwerkstatt Europa in Munich – What’s not there.

Charlie curates an international programme of dance events at Wainsgate Chapel in Yorkshire: Wainsgate Dances: https://www.facebook.com/groups/559122184434991

What is the workshop about?

This workshop takes explorations in the studio with Steve Paxton’s Material for the spine and my own further studies as a departure point for exploring movement generated from skeletal imagery, perception, sensation and action.

We will work with the skeleton as an expanded architectural proposition relating to both interior and exterior landscapes – connecting ourselves to the environment and including other bodies as part of those landscapes.

There will be explorations of linear, curving, folding, spiralling and multi-direction/dimensional pathways in solo, duet and group improvisations, and we will challenge ourselves to rediscover and reinvent our relationships to this ever developing phenomenon that has become known as contact improvisation.

Learning, unlearning and relearning will be a way for us to invigorate what we practice – This will be two days of delving into the micro and macrocosms of our embodied imaginations – That might all sound pretty out there, but actually it will be grounded in substantial research and practice. Come and take the ride!
